The project combines sustainable fashion, upcycling, AI, and rural innovation, merging circular design with AI’s generative power in a collaborative rural maker culture.
Host: Ignacio Márquez, Rural Hackers, Spain
Visitor: Lotte Van Ermengem, Atelier Luu, Belgium
Prototyping open tools are essential in a context where most AI technologies are proprietary and commercially driven. These systems often fail to address the needs of small-scale creators and sustainable practices. This cross-sectoral collaboration between Ignacio Márquez from Rural Hackers and Lotte Van Ermengem from Atelier Luu is an exploratory residency focused on the potential intersection of artificial intelligence and sustainable fashion. The aim is to co-develop a first prototype of an open-source tool that can assist upcycling artists in generating sewing patterns adapted to reused textiles. Rather than delivering a final product, the project prioritizes early-stage conceptualization, testing initial assumptions, and generating design artefacts that can guide future development. This initiative represents a step toward empowering circular fashion through accessible technology.
The project will take place in Galicia, Spain at the mid-September. Stay tuned for the outcomes!
