Rewoven Realities

Carnica Institut x Osnovna šola Janez Puhar, Slovenia

The LLab Rewoven Realities invited students to engage in a creative, interdisciplinary experience at the Textile Art Biennial BIEN, blending fashion, textile art, and performance. Through workshops, students explored sustainability, intellectual property, and slow fashion, while critically analysing the narratives around these issues.

The project combined participatory action with social choreography, encouraging hands-on creativity in upcycling and design. Participants created their own designs, participate in a public performance, and reflect on ownership, creativity, and environmental impact.

The public performance presented at the opening events of BIEN 2025 in Kranj. Under the topic “NEWSTAGIA IN THE AIR”, the students explored the connection between air, upcycled textiles, and music by engaging in discussions, presenting their work, and contributing to audio recordings. Inspired by recycled and reimagined musical pieces, they developed a unique catwalk concept, considering its historical and contemporary significance while adapting it to their individual styles. Using Kranj’s old town center as a natural stage, they experimented with scenography and audience interaction, culminating in a performance where their costumes, movements, and recorded audio merge into a fully immersive experience.

Carnica Institut, founded in 2010 in Kranj, Slovenia, is a cultural non-governmental organisation managing public infrastructure, organising events, and fostering collaborations between communities, cultural operators, and local government. Initially an art hub, it evolved in 2017 into a regional centre supporting NGOs and individuals in culture, creativity, civil society, and environmental initiatives.
